As I sit here today writing this column, I am listening to music. When I drive around town doing my chores, I am listening to music. When I work out… well, you get the point.

Tuning out the noise in the gym is one of the real great things about listening to music while working out. Throw on a pair of head phones with your favorite tunes and you can really increase your focus. It's almost like an adrenaline rush.
I use an MP3 player and download all the music that tends to gets me revved. There is no way you can't respond to it. Think about it – if it gets you revved when you listen to it in your car, think of the effect that it will have when you're performing cardio or weight training. The music will help you to literally go the extra mile or lift the extra rep or bang out the extra set. You'll start challenging yourself.
Take those head phones and you'll see what I mean. The entire atmosphere undergoes a change. I experience it in my workouts. If I take the head phones off even momentarily, the world of the gym seems sleepy and non-motivating. Plus I get the added bonus of listening to my favorite music, not the music the gym plays.
Even just a change of songs on an MP3 player from one workout to the next can have a profound effect on the quality of a workout.
