Why Doesn’t my Pedometer Read ALL the MILES?

Why Doesn’t my Pedometer Read ALL the MILES?

We get this Q all the time…and we LOVE it, because it continues to prove to us how AWESOME walkers really are!  You have probably done it – you thought, “Hey, I’ll pop in my 3 Mile walking DVD and wear my pedometer for fun!”  Then you’re disappointed, because you see at the end of your hard, sweaty miles that you only walked 2.1 miles!

Let us clear the air!!

Pedometers are great for reading motion – forward and back, side steps, and even walking in place!  But when it comes to kicks and knee-lifts, the pedometer just simply can’t pick up on them.  We love adding kicks and knee-lifts to our walking workouts, because it increases your range of motion, and thus uses more muscle.  Our walks are truly MULTI-MUSCLE workouts!

But have no fear…

Our walks are EXPERTLY paced by Leslie herself.  If you take the music from any of our DVDs and walk to the pace on a treadmill or outdoors, you will have walked the number of miles indicated by the title of the disk.  The distance is all in the speed of the music.  As long as you keep those feet moving to the beat, no matter what step you are doing, you are DEFINITELY earning the right to say that you walked the FULL miles!

We love your questions – keep them coming!!

I am 59 years old and have been walking wthl Leslie since my early 40"s. I love all of her videos. I recently bought her "Walk It Off & Tone It Up" - 5 mile calorie burning walk. I really love the workout, but I HATE the wide, green strip that appears all through the workout. It really blocks Leslie's footwork and makes it hard to follow. The wording that appears in the green strip is fine, but the green strip should not be there. I really hope it doesn't appear in any more videos. I walk with Leslie 6 days a week and will continue to do so. I tell everyone how great it is to walk in the mornings to get the day started. I look every time that I go to WalMart for a new video. I am so glad that Leslie keeps making videos that are more and more challenging. Thanks Leslie!!

Hi Leslie, I walk with Helen and Dave and the gang in our local village hall in Coldingham, Scotland every Wednesday evening. This week we had a real treat as Joni from London came all the way up to Scotland to do a live class with us. Amazing - really inspirational. I love the ethos of the Walk at Home programme. Hope it takes off in the UK. I've lost nearly 3st in the last 2 years - much of it thanks to W at H. Thank you.

Exactly how many calories are burned by walking the three fast miles?

The music and the kicks and moves lift walking to a new level! It's funny because my son does a lot of those strength kicks and lateral moves during football practices - I love it! I don't care what my pedometer says - I can tell that the DVD has me doing 2, 3, or 5 miles by the way I'm feeling when I've completed the walk. Oh, and that's GREAT!!!

HI Michelle. Depending on a bunch of factors, you can burn anywhere from 300 - 375 calories in that workout! -The WAH Team

Hi Leslie! I've been walking with you for 7 years! I'm 36 years old and I absolutely love your walking DVD's! My aunt was watching me work out one day and now she is a big fan of your also! I hope to one day meet you in Sacramento CA! Thank you for clarifying the question on pedometers ... sometimes I get a lower reading too (3 mile workout and only reads 2 miles). I would workout a little bit more until it reads over 3 miles :) But now that's been clarified I feel much better! Thank you Leslie & Team!

I just finished the 4 Big Miles challenge (i.e. I did it 10 days straight) and of course I and my family are very proud of ME! I did not see much in the way of weight loss, but WOWZA I did see a change in my body shape. I lost a half of an inch off my calves and a full inch off of my thighs and hips. I am sure my body fat dropped as well. So, just a warning to folks who are only following the scale, this program truly is about fitness, not just numbers. Don't let the scale discourage you.

Hi Leslie, My Mom who is 77 years young belongs to a Christian exercise group that does your two mile walk three times a week. They have been doing it for either six or seven years. These ladies are an inspiration to me. Most of the ladies range in age from 50-80. They started with a VHS tape and have moved to the DVD. I'm not sure how many they have worn out. I have even purchased the DVD for my Mom because she wants to walk when they don't have a class. I know this is keeping them all young. Thanks for your enthusiastic workouts.
