A Healthy Thursday to everyone!

BOOSTED walking is one smart way to get more results in LESS workout time!

LOVE the great questions from our Walkers  … this is a great time of the year to BOOST your workouts!

Hi Leslie,

In some of your workouts you have intervals of intensity (like the Big Burn workout).  Why is that?  What is the difference between maintaining your intensity throughout your workout and varying it?  Are there benefits that intervals give that maintaining doesn’t?

LS: AWESOME question sweet walker! …. The steady state or “maintaining intensity” that you ask about is getting over-shadowed by a lot of studies that suggest “intervals” especially “aerobic or cardio” based intervals are getting us fitness results that you can see and feel much faster than exercising at a consistent intensity.  My DVD’s are incorporating “BOOSTED WALKING” into the workouts which is my version of a mild jog!  We go from a gentle walk – to a brisk walk – and then to a boosted walk – we do intervals of “brisk and boosted” – some intervals are 3mins. brisk to 2 mins. boosted for example.  I think the best way for us to enjoy total fitness is to incorporate “interval-style” workouts on some days of the week and do “steady state – style” on other days!

Try this in your workout plan for a few weeks my friend and let me know how it works for you …. Thanks for the great question … many will benefit from this info!

Burn More Calories in Less Time: Try Shorter, Intensive Cardio Sessions

Fitness experts say interval workouts, in which you alternate a short bout of hard-as-you-can-push-it exercise with several “recovery” minutes at a more moderate pace, are among the most effective weight-loss methods on the planet. “They burn more calories than a longer, same-paced workout would because your heart rate stays elevated even when you drop the intensity back down. Plus, constantly revving up and then putting on the brakes a bit really challenges your body and expends more energy,” explains a representative with the American Council on Exercise. (And there’s a lot of research  backing that!)

The Bonus: Workouts this way enable you to accomplish more in less time.

DVD’s to try BOOSTED Walking Intervals …

The Big Burn – 2 Miles of Intervals!

5K with a Twist! (The “Twist” is that this is not a traditional way to walk a 5K – or 3.1 Miles)

I have been doing the walk DVDs for several months now but just recently started doing the boot camp DVD. (Every other day for about 2 weeks now) and it has some of the boosted walk intervals also. I am already seeing more results.

Leslie, I have been doing your walk off 10 pounds dvd since Jan. and I love it! I have a question for you: I am due to have surgery on my foot soon so walking will be out for around 6 weeks. BOO!!!! Are there any dvds that I can do from a sitting position that will keep me focused on working out and also get my heart rate up? I would truly appreciate your help! Thanks! Cindy (3/23/2011)

Leslie, I have been walking rather consistently with the 5 mile burning dvd for about 2 months now. And doing very well. But my biggest concern now is tightening the muscles in my arms. I had a weight loss surgery 4 years ago, and didn't excercise right away. Can you suggest something that will help get rid of these flabby arms by the summer ?

I just started the Boot Camp DVD (3 miles) this morning. WOW, what a workout. Tomorrow I'll go back to a walk/kick box work out (yours of course) and back to Boot Camp on Wednesday. I'm so happy I found the DVD this weekend. I have alot of problems with plantar fasciitis and I'm hoping this helps me with all the stretching! Thank you Leslie!

Let’s hear from you!
