Over 50 Weight Loss?

This awesome question came in from iVillage Challenge member ….

“As someone over 50 needing to lose weight, do you have specific suggestions for a diet and exercise plan?”

HELLOOOO iV Challenge Member ! … I am just weeks away from joining you in that 50 club!  And I can testify that the 50′s can be the strongest years of a person’s life!  And the BEST news is that no matter how de-conditioned … or what age … you CAN bring the body back … back to better health …. back to a better weight!
It’s so great that you want to!  I worry for those that say … “Well it’s age … gettin’ old …  can’t do anything about my weight or my aches and pains!!!!”  THAT DRIVES ME NUTS!!!!  We have the power at any time in life to improve and change our bodies, our minds and our souls!!!!
My suggestion is to get started walking – even before you think about your foods – this challenge is a fantastic way to have a plan!  You don’t have to walk the full sessions each day  … even a few minutes a day will build endurance … you’ll feel better and better … you’ll naturally want to do more … and all of a sudden … POW …. your pants don’t fit!  They are loose … you are bursting with energy …. that’s just a little of what “walking” can do …. there’s so much more! I hope you’ll start your walk journey right now!

God Bless my friend … you are in a great time of life to make “walking” your sport for life!

I just turned 46 and am hyper-aware that 50 is just around the corner. It's so reassuring to know that it's never too late to achieve good fitness. I have about 100 lbs. to lose. Thank you for your motivation and inspiration.

Janis, congratulations!!! You are an inspiration. I have many of Leslie's DVD's. I know they work. They have in the past. I need to stop "thinking" so much and just DO it! Thanks for the motivation. Keep up the great work!

I am a 58y/o female who has been walking with Leslie for over 20yrs. No huge weight loss stories, but with the help of her videos, I have been able to keep my weight mostly under control. My concern recently is a noted decrease in flexibility. I exercise by outdoor walking, walking videos (including those that incorporate strength training) and weighted ball (6lb) routines. I fall down laughing trying to perform anything beyond very BASIC yoga moves. Any suggestions?? Thanks

I am a 68 year of age - not old nor young. I am on supplemental oxygen and just finished 2 miles of Leslie's 5 mile walk. I am 45 lbs over weight now, but started out 20 lbs heavier than I am now. Tried every diet know to man (or woman), and have finally come the the conclusion that losing weight is simply a matter of eating less and moving more. I haven't cut out any foods, limit treats to once a week, use a small plate and workout with Leslie 5 days a week. It's not easy, but it can be done.

I have a question, I have been using the Walking DVDs for about 3 years, i have a variety of them i have been using 3lb weights, was wondering if i should go up to 4lbs? I am 54 years young and have lost about 30lbs in the last 4 years. I use the walking 3 to 4 times a week. I also do other activities, line dancing, riding bikes.

I love doing the walk away the pounds video. The exercise is good. I hate hearing all the talking, I don't need to know who is a grandmother, after you hear it a few times it really gets old. Wish I could mute the instructions, and just hear the music to stay on beat.

My husband and I have been walking outside for about 30 years averaging at least a half hour 3 x a week. As part of John's UPMC for Life benefits, he received one of your walking tapes about 2 months ago. We started walking with you, Leslie, and are hooked! You are so enthusiastic and motivational. We bought several more tapes and are really enjoying walking with you indoors this winter. I feel that I am getting a much better work-out than when I walk outside. My husband is a diabetic and I should loose about 12 pounds so we will continue walking with you using your DVD's. Thank you so much!
